2014 Vintage Fall Releases

This fall begins our 23rd and final year in the business of making fine pinot noir. We were blessed to start with the 1994 "world vintage" and are now releasing the first of several wines from the stellar 2014 growing season. 2014 began early, featured moderate weather throughout and produced low to normal yields, resulting in wines of superior concentration, complexity and balance. They should age gracefully well into the 2020's. This is a vintage to savor, age and savor some more!

  Salzgeber-Chan Vineyard, Russian River Valley

Beautiful ripe cherry color. A gorgeous bouquet greets the senses. Aromas are fruit driven with dark plum, cranberry, ripe cherry and blackberries, notes of fresh cut cedar, mineral with a hint of earth and Pinot funk. You'll find the rich entry on the palate to express the aromas with added mixed berries, cola spice, balanced acidity with long, lingering finish. Classic Salzgeber-Chan qualities.

Wiley Vineyard, Anderson Valley, Mendocino County

Rich, deep ruby in color. Complex aromas of red and dark berries, with crisp notes of strawberry and cassis with an added component of forest floor and earth balancing the fruit. Smooth and round on the palate with a bright acidity, integrated flavors of black cherry, currant, almond, clove and fresh berry pie. Beautifully structured, long lively finish.

Winemaker's Tasting Notes - 2013 Vintage

We were still basking in the glory of a great 2012 vintage, when a superlative 2013 growing season came along and gave us another year of terrific quality, if slightly less quantity. The summer was marked by even temperatures, with no heat spikes of significance and lovely weather during the critical bloom phase. 1-2” of rain in early September created some anxiety but was followed by warm, breezy weather and did no real damage. A subsequent short delay in picking only enhanced the quality that was already there. Our pinots are a little riper than 2012 but still feature the complex flavors balanced by firm acidity that characterize our wines.

  Lingenfelder Vineyard, Russian River Valley

Bright ruby color. Bouquet of raspberry, cherry and pomegranate greets the senses, with a floral note entering on the first sip. Smooth on the palate with integrated flavors of mixed berries, strawberries, cardamon spice and elderflower. Balanced and round with a generous, lingering finish.

Peters Vineyard, Sonoma Coast, Russian River Valley

Brilliant garnet in the glass. Spicy and fruit driven nose of dark, ripe cherries and strawberries with added sandalwood incense. Quickly opens up on the palate adding blackberry & plum with a whisper of wild thyme. Balanced complexity of ripe red and black fruits and spicy notes with a kick of anise at the back of the palate. Long, smooth finish dances across.

  Ridley Vineyard, Anderson Valley

Deep, ripe cherry color. Brooding dark fruit aromas of blackberries, cherry cola, ripe strawberries, fresh cedar and almond. Fruit aromas carry through to the palate with added white pepper, sweet fennel and herbal, forest floor edge. Finish is lively and complex, with lasting notes of fruit and spice paired with balance and grace.

  Salzgeber-Chan Vineyard, Russian River Valley

Saturated ruby color. Lively and complex bouquet displays dark cherries, ripe plum, mixed berries, and caramel, slight hint of toast. Luscious on the palate, dark fruits and spicy notes merge with a touch of lavender, incense and forest floor. Tannins offer a supple backbone to the generous finish. Total Cases: 185.

Wiley Vineyard, Anderson Valley, Mendocino County

Brilliant deep red color. Gorgeous nose with open aromatics of blackberries, toasted grain, dried herbs and violets. Palate offers a hint of earth up front quickly followed by a beautiful complexity of plum, cherries, brown spices and mixed red and dark berries. Long balanced finish with silky resolved tannins. Total Cases: 140.

Winemaker's Tasting Notes - 2012 Vintage

The 2012 vintage went off without a hitch. There were no ill-timed rains to impede pollination or encourage outbreaks of mildew, and no significant heat waves to stress the vines or shrivel the ripening grapes. In short, it was a near perfect year in wine country. The gradual ripening of the fruit resulted in both quantity and high quality. Our wines from this vintage show intense fruit and great structure, balanced acidity and great aging potential.

  Peters Vineyard, Sonoma Coast

Brilliant garnet. Complex nose of dark plum, blackberry, rose petals, anise and a hint of orange peel. Lively on the palate, rich, red strawberry and plum, brown spices. Full bodied with bright acidity and long finish. Total Cases: 160.

  Ridley Vineyard, Anderson Valley

Bright cherry red. Pretty aromas of cherries, red berries and plum with herbal notes, fennel and hints of sassafras and vanilla. Aromas follow through in the palate along with sweet brown spices and cherry cola. Well balanced with vibrant acidity and a smooth, lingering finish. Total Cases: 180.

A Note from Hank
“Joie de Vin”, Russian River Valley Blend

66% Green Valley, 17% Peters, 17% Salzgeber-Chan vineyards.
Occasionally some lots I have in the cellar are better used as components in a blend. In 2012, I decided that the high-toned, red fruit driven lot from Green Valley needed some of Peters' darker red fruit and herbal notes, and Salzgeber-Chan's earth and spice to produce a balanced wine with moderate weight and complexity.

Joie de Vin, Russian River Valley

Clear, medium garnet color. Aromas of ripe, red fruits, with notes of herbs, white pepper and mushrooms. Layered palate of red and dark fruits, spice and floral notes. Lush texture, yet a bright acidity that carries the flavors through a long, smooth finish. Total Cases: 140.

Wiley Vineyard, Anderson Valley, Mendocino County

Dark, clear burgundy in color. Beautiful nose of ripe red and dark fruits, wood, toast, cherry-cola and fresh herbs. Great depth and body with balanced tannins, and nice fruit and acidity on the palate. Lingering flavors of black cherry, cassis and anise on the long, smooth finish.

  Lingenfelder Vineyard, Russian River Valley

Displays a bright ruby color. A round and complex bouquet of dark cherries, strawberries, a hint of candied ginger and soft notes of almond, toast and rose petals. Great balance of fruit, spice and classic Pinot characteristics. Long, lively finish that lingers on the palate.

  Salzgeber-Chan Vineyard, Russian River Valley

Crisp, deep garnet color. Round, rich aromas of dark plum, ripe cherries, brown spices/cardamon with herbal and earthy notes. Concentrated flavors on the palate are fruit driven with added sweet tobacco and a mineral aspect. Long, silky finish, classic understated elegance.

Winemaker's Tasting Notes - 2011 Vintage

2011 was a challenging year, to say the least. Following a perfect growing season, rain at bloom and in the middle of harvest significantly reduced the crop and forced the vines to struggle to ripen the remaining fruit. Mildew was a serious problem in many vineyards following 5” of rain in early October, requiring very selective picking of the grapes and a considerable loss of crop.

We produced 550 cases of pinot noir, compared to 800 in a “normal” year.

Winemaker's Tasting Notes - 2010 Vintage

2010 will go down in history as one of the most difficult years that I have seen in my 33 years as a winemaker. The nightmare began with chilly, wet weather in the spring (6” of rain in April!) which prevented pollination of the flowers and significantly reduced the crop. It continued with one of the coolest Julys on record which slowed ripening, and then extreme heat in August and September, resulting in additional loss of fruit. To give an example, I had to make numerous passes through the vineyards in the 2 weeks before harvest to clip off sun-damaged clusters. The remaining fruit was of excellent quality but produced 30% less wine. The wines are beautiful examples of the terroirs from which they come, but the quantities are extremely limited.

We hope you will enjoy our new releases as much as we did with our salmon dinner and tasting notes party.
